Unlike carbon sequestration, which involves physically storing carbon in soil or biomass, methane reduction credits operate on a different principle. Livestock — particularly beef cattle and dairy cows — produce methane during enteric fermentation, the digestive process that breaks down feed in ruminant stomachs. Most certification cycles require a minimum of 12 months of documented data before an initial audit can be completed, and the full crediting period often extends three to five years before producers see maximum financial return. Ranchers entering this space should treat it as a medium-term investment rather than an immediate revenue source.

Additionality Requirements Carbon protocols require that emission reductions be "additional" — meaning they would not have occurred without the financial incentive of carbon credit revenue. This requirement can disqualify practices already underway on a given operation, a frustration commonly cited by progressive ranchers who adopted improved feed management years before carbon markets became accessible to livestock producers.

The pasture has always been the foundation of the livestock business. In 2025, it may also be the foundation of a more diversified financial portfolio.
